Last year, i-D published the article, “Fashion has reached peak trendcore, and we're all tired.” A year later, we’re still tired: of ever-shorter trend cycles, of TikTokers blithely touring Shein factories, of taste spoon-fed by an algorithm.
That “click-bait fashion” is bad for fashion and bad for the environment is no secret. And yet, fast furniture—guilty of the same vices—often slips under the radar. Built for a world of nomadic lifestyles and the increasing cost-of-living, click-bait furniture allows access to dreamy apartments to be folded up and disposed of when the lease ends. Social media has accelerated cycles of decor trends, telling us to DIY the Ultrafragola mirror and throw it away next year. Meanwhile furniture waste has grown an astounding 450% since 1960.
